Coast Guard Exams

There are four exams for the Coast Guard License covering five subjects. The tests are basically the same for the Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel to 100 Ton Masters. There is very little difference. The four exams are:

Rules of the Road

This is a closed book exam consisting of 30 questions. You must make a 90% on the exam to pass.

This exam covers right-of-way rules, lights, dayshapes, fog signals, and maneuvering signals.

Navigation General

This exam is 20 questions open book and a score of 70% is required to pass.

The exam covers tides, buoys, weather, compass error and relies heavily on the use of the Light List and Coast Pilot.

Plotting

This exam has 10 questions open book and a score of 70% is required to pass.

The exam uses a full sized color chart to plot the problems on.

Areas covered are dead reckoning, bearing fixes, running fixes, and set & drift problems. Other questions may be taken from the Coast Pilot for that area.

Deck General/Deck Safety

This exam cover two areas as the name inplies. The exam is 70 questions open book with 70% required for passing. There is a lot on this exam from fire fighting, towing, basic ship construction, lines, knots, ship handling, and a good sampling of the Code of Federal Regulations. The good news is that it's open book and most of the answers can be found in the exam room. This exam usually takes the longest to complete.
